Deja vu? This sounds familiar for some reason.  Didn't we have another thread like this about a month or so ago?
Yet I still don't understand how people can mistake emo for metal.
But whatever I guess...

No that thread wanted to discuss what's the difference, this thread wants to discuss why metal fans get offended when people assume metal is emo and vice versa.

Oh alright then.
Yes, good question. Why would metal fans get pissed when people mistake metal for a genre that thrives on suicidal content?

Ignorance is blis.

idk most emo music that I have had the displeasure or hearing involves some sort of a personal infliction of pain be it physical or emotional there all just crying about something. Granted the only time I really hear emo music is when I'm with my one friend who likes to listen to it and he's a character himself.

Download "Blood On My Hands" or "Pretty, Handsome, Awkward" from The Used and tell me if they sound suicidal. (Hint:Its not)

the good emo bands from the old days (like 5-7 years ago) have progressed out of the genre and just make good rock music now....like The Used

Well I'm not big on either genre but safe to say, I'd rather be stuck in a room with metal heads, than a room with emo's

Well, I don't know about that... Metal heads these days are ridiculous and most of the time hairy men, at least emo girls are hot and don't stink.

Okay, for all the uneducated, emo isn't cut yourself and cry.

Emo is a more emotional punk, punk with more feelings, rather than "REBEL REBEL REBEL!"

Metal however, can deal with many things, more often that not, is not emotional.
However, we are going into many subgenres (too ****ing many) where metal has completely changed.

There are two types of emo bands in the world.

There is real emo music, music that actually deal with someones deep personal pain, ala Nine Inch Nails or Placebo

Then there is the vomit inducing trash that has polluted rock music which includes MCR, The Used, Hawthorn heights, and crap load of other garbage.

Here for everyone who wants to hear the difference.

Where the hell is the punk aspect in emo music?  If whiny bitches was a genre, I'd then agree that Emo is emotional whiny bitches.

B Man, that emo you're talking about it's the commercial aspect that MTV have
distorted. Emo it's a genre that have existed since the early 80's, late 70's. It is just that with the passing of time people hear the word "EMO" and think that because it's the short term for emotional everything's about gayness and whiny bitches while the real meaning have been completely changed.  Just look at yourself, you're another that got dragged to all this misunderstanding, just like the rest of the masses.

This is as annoying as the people that say that video game shouldn't have violence or mature themes because they are for kids. Or when a story like: Oh my son stole my car because of Grand Theft Auto!

This is real emo: http://www.myspace.com/theclevereffect

This is what people think that it is emo: http://www.myspace.com/twofaceflower

Both bands are close friends of mine.

Nine Inch Nails has nothing to do with emo.

And the other bands are just pop rock with some elements of punk. I say elements because that beat it's too slow to be called punk. That's the perfect example of what people THINK that it is emo but it isn't.

EMO have a fast beat on the drums while the guitar does lots of octaves. Octaves is a way to make a normal note sound squeaky. Singer often screams or just follow the pace. From that is that the term "screamo" was created, because of the constant screaming on some EMO songs but I consider that nonsense.

It's kinda hard for me to explain because I know all these things but by their spanish terms not english.

Octaves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB6Dj2wE9Wc
A punk beat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=562rEdC3umw

Just remember: Emo = punk

Didn't Greenday go from Pop Punk to Emo?

But yeah, real emo music has pretty much nothing to do with suicidal nonsense - the lyrics are simply more personal and reflective (as opposed to Death Metal, which has lyrics more concerned with shagging sheep and wearing their entrails as a cravat).

just because nine inch nails has emotional songs doesnt mean he is an emo band.
most music created by any rock band is emotional.
saying nin is emo because he has a bunch of emotional songs is like saying three days grace is emo for having a bunch of emotional songs.

NIN is the sh!t. end of story. trent reznor is a god in this music industry.

For you maybe. Where I am the emo's are more okay I guess but the metal head chicks I've met were awesome.
